Support for IPTV not available (IGMP, multicast)
Have bought this WNDR3700 in 2010 summer.
The speed and functionality available works great. So in general I was happy with this router. This is the top netgear router available.
Month ago have have migrated to new internet service provider, and only then
realised that WNDR3700 is missing interesting functionality used for IPTV, this is multicast and IGMP. And from Netgear there is no info if this functionality will be available or not. I think this can be implemented using firmware upgrades.
Strange that this is issue in top netgear router. Also other brands have this multicast support.
So before buying WNDR3700 please check if you will use iptv technology based on ip multicast.
closing in on 1 year of ownership, very happy
Bought this router back in Oct in large part based upon SmallNetBuilder's glowing review. Prices have come down since then, but we did luck out with a BB sale that dropped the cost $20 which is about on par with what the WNDR3700 typically sells for now. We knew we didn't need the 5GHz band, but wanted it in preparation for our next laptop/netbook/etc.
The speed has been great. Not as fast as the numbers reported with beamforming tech (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/beamforming-wifi-ruckus,2390.html), but plenty fast enough for our needs. We recently moved and are expanding our wireless network, but prior to the move, the router handled multiple Netflix/youtube HD streams along with some browsing while simultaneously keeping PC/Xbox360 gameplay nice and smooth during online action.
We're still running the original BIOS (v1.0.4.31NA) and would like to upgrade for the traffic meter, but are sketchy at this point due to various complaints about newer BIOS revisions causing some owners to experience slower speeds on the router's USB port. And speaking of that USB port, we love it. No it doesn't allow for attaching a printer, but we've combined Netgear's readyshare/USB port feature with a WD external hdd to function as a poor man's NAS.
For now, my only complaints would be minor: the (relatively) high cost and the lack of a functioning traffic meter with the stock BIOS. Despite those small negatives, we're very pleased.
Great homo/soho dual band router
Great performance in 5G (channel 153). nice clear band in my area.
Even in 2.4G band much better performer even when running 802.11g than my asus wl500g
I have two wndeh111 operating in bridge mode connected to it,
with DHCP client computers on the other end of these bridges.
So DHCP to clients over bridges does work.
Unfortunately wndeh111 only have 2 x100mbit ethernet ports.
have 1 wireless laptop client (using intel 5100), 2 bridges, 6 wired clients,
and an el cheapo 5port dlink gig switch connected to this router.
Wired connections are 100 and 1000 Mbit.
All working perfectly well thru this router..
Stable 300Mbps connection 10m away thru two fibreboard walls,
connecting to intel 5100 equipped thinkpad t400.
Works great with my docsis 3.0 cable modem cisco dpq3212.
one of the few consumer routers out there with gig wan port.
No slow down at all going thru router vs direct link to cable modem.
Internal antennas are annoying as can't add or change antenna coverage.
Typical netgear UI for dummies, limited to no explanation of features,
not particularly flexible, but good enough for home/soho customers
latest version of firmware appears to be more reliable,
no repeat of a problem that required a reboot. (some sort of open port limitation)
limitations to its operation as complained about by previous reviewer,
typical of netgear, (and other manufacturers, e.g dlink)
deliberately hobbling their consumer product,
as they have other devices they want to sell to you, eg wndeh111
High end users should expect problems
I purchased this router to upgrade from an old 2.4Ghz Belkin N1 which is suffering badly from old age. Sadly it was a mistake, I can only assume the good reviews here are from other Netgear customers trying to offload this lemon on EBay.
Router issues:
- WDS is available only for WEP networks not WPA/WPA2.
- No software restart button in the Web UI.
- Does not route DHCP packets to client wireless bridges.
- Cannot connect to Apple Airport Express using 5Ghz radio and WPA/WPA2 (2.4Ghz works).
- Cannot operate in access point mode, modem MUST be connected to the WAN port.
- Poor performance routing from 5ghz network to 2.4Ghz network.
- Unstable, requires daily resets.
This is Netgear's top of the line offering and it falls to deliver on both promised features and on features I would expect from cheaper hardware. I strongly recommend avoiding this router.
Great wireless router!
This is the best wireless router I have ever had. I upgraded from a Netgear WGR614 v6 and could not be happier. Great range and VERY fast...wired and wireless.
I have a Thinkpad T60 laptop that originally came with an Intel 3945abg mini PCI-express adapter. After getting the new router I upgraded my T60 with an Atheros AR5BXB72 802.11abgn mini PCI-express adapter (Lenovo FRU 42T0825) from ebay. In addition, I had to install the 3rd (MIMO) antenna (IBM FRU 42R9909) direct from IBM. Installing the card was simple but, installing the antenna was a royal pain since it goes next to the LCD on the side of the laptop lid.
My home is 2 stories plus a basement. My office and the router are located in the basement. I ran some tests using LAN Speed Test and Qcheck and got great results. My "Position-A" is in the same room as the router with the T60 within 8 feet. Position-B is on the first floor in the room directly over my basement office. Position-C is also on the first floor but, one room over. Using LAN Speed Test I would upload a 50 MB file from my desktop which is wired to the router to my T60 which is connected wireless. Each test was run 5 times. The results were very consistent from run to run. Here are my results:
POSITION-A (Write/Read Mbps)
2.4 GHz /20 - 69.8 / 52.4
2.4 Ghz /40 - 126.4 / 117.0
5.0 Ghz /40 - 143.4 / 131.2
POSITION-B
2.4 GHz /20 - 69.0 / 49.4
2.4 Ghz /40 - 104.2 / 74.4
5.0 Ghz /40 - 59.0 / 43.6
POSITION-C
2.4 GHz /20 - 62.8 / 47.2
2.4 Ghz /40 - 84.8 / 53.2
5.0 Ghz /40 - 29.0 / 42.8
As you can see, the 5GHz/40 results were best within the same room but fell off quickly with distance. The 2.4GHz/40 setting was best overall.
There are a few features that could make this router better but, nothing critical for me. I bought this router after reading the review here at smallnetbuilder. I'll have to admit that I was a bit puzzled by the lukewarm review of the same router over at Tom's Hardware but, after re-reading their review it appears they had some problems with the client which may have influenced the results they got from the router.
